Starting this East Coast road trip in New York City set the tone for the entire route. Spending multiple days here made a huge difference compared to trying to rush through major landmarks in a single day.

We spent three nights in New York City, using Brooklyn as our base, which made it easy to access Manhattan while avoiding some of the chaos of staying in the busiest areas.

🏙️ Exploring Manhattan

Much of our time in New York was spent exploring different areas of Manhattan, where each neighborhood offered a completely different atmosphere.

We began in Lower Manhattan, walking through historic areas around South St Seaport and Battery Park, where we enjoyed wide views over the harbor and the surrounding skyline.

From there, we continued through lively neighborhoods such as Chinatown and Little Italy, which were full of color and cultural diversity and provided a completely different atmosphere compared to the financial district.

We also spent time around Union Square, a lively crossroads between Midtown and Downtown where we saw local markets and enjoyed the vibrant street life. Nearby, we passed by Gramercy Park, a unique private park surrounded by elegant residential buildings.

One of the highlights of our visit was heading to the Upper East Side, where we explored areas around the Metropolitan Museum of Art and admired the architecture of the famous Guggenheim Museum.

Another memorable experience was visiting Roosevelt Island, which we reached via the cable car. Although the weather was rainy that morning, the ride itself offered great views over the East River and Manhattan skyline.

We also made sure to visit the Empire State Building and Times Square, two of the city’s most iconic landmarks.

One of the most memorable moments during our stay happened in Harlem on a Sunday morning.

We explored this neighborhood while searching for a gospel mass, and although we couldn’t get into the church we had originally planned to visit, we kept wandering until we found an opening at Grace Congregational Church of Harlem.

Gospel masses are much longer than those back home in Spain — sometimes lasting up to three hours — but the joyful atmosphere and live music made the experience unforgettable.

After attending the service, we continued walking through Harlem and passed several important landmarks, including the City College of New York, the historic Grange (Alexander Hamilton’s former residence), Morningside Park, the impressive Cathedral Church of St John the Divine, Columbia University, and the General Grant National Memorial.

🌊 Day 5 — Long Island, Hamptons and ferry to Connecticut

Leaving New York City marked the true beginning of the driving portion of this East Coast road trip route. Continuing along peaceful roads lined with impressive mansions, we eventually reached the beach near Dolphin Lane, where we stopped briefly to enjoy the scenery. Swimming conditions quickly reminded us how powerful Atlantic currents can be — the water was unexpectedly strong, and after only a few minutes, it became clear that staying close to shore was essential for safety.

Another detail we noticed along the way was that many beaches on Long Island — particularly in areas around the Hamptons — were private, meaning access can be restricted unless you’re staying locally or have specific permits.

One of the highlights of our visit was walking along parts of the Freedom Trail, which connects many of Boston’s most important historic sites. Following the red-brick path through the city felt like a relaxed way to discover key moments in American history while simply strolling through everyday streets.

We also spent time around Boston Common and the Public Garden, two neighboring parks that form the green heart of the city. Visiting during the summer made the area feel especially lively, with people relaxing on the grass, walking along shaded paths and enjoying the warm weather.

Instead of driving, we flew from Boston to Buffalo Niagara International Airport, which turned out to be one of the easiest ways to reach Niagara Falls. After landing, we rented a car with Alamo and drove about 25 minutes to Niagara Falls State Park, where we spent the day exploring the area and getting our first close views of the waterfalls.

Walking through Niagara Falls State Park, the oldest state park in the United States, was an unforgettable experience. Standing near the falls, surrounded by the constant roar of water and drifting mist, made the scale of Niagara feel far more powerful than anything we had seen in photographs. One of the highlights of our visit was taking the famous Maid of the Mist boat tour, which brought us incredibly close to the base of the falls — an experience that left us completely soaked but absolutely thrilled.

After exploring the falls, we crossed into Canada via the Rainbow Bridge, where wait times meant the process took longer than expected. Once on the Canadian side, we continued driving toward Toronto, marking the beginning of the segment of the trip across the border.

Although we considered visiting the CN Tower observation deck, we ultimately decided to skip it due to the ticket price and our limited time, choosing instead to continue exploring at street level.

While Toronto didn’t completely win me over compared to other stops on this trip, it still added variety to the route and offered an interesting contrast to the historic cities we had visited earlier. Later that day, we began the return journey into New York State, where we spent the night before continuing south.
