🇺🇸 What is Memorial Day and why it matters
Memorial Day, observed on the last Monday of May, honors the men and women who died while serving in the United States Armed Forces. While it marks the unofficial start of summer and the beginning of road trip season, it is also a time of remembrance across the country.
Many cities — especially Washington DC — host ceremonies and tributes throughout the weekend. Visiting places such as memorials or military cemeteries can be a meaningful way to reflect on the true significance of the holiday before heading out on a Memorial Day weekend getaway.
Note that Memorial Day weekend is one of the busiest travel periods in the country, making early planning especially important for accommodations and tickets.

Day 1️⃣: Philadelphia, Pennsylvania
ℹ️ Philadelphia quick facts Distance from Washington DC: 140 miles / 225 km State: Pennsylvania Why visit: historic landmarks, American heritage and vibrant city life
Our first stop on this long weekend getaway was Philadelphia, one of the most historically significant cities in the United States. We spent a full day exploring the city and staying with a friend who lived there, which made the experience feel even more local and relaxed.
Philadelphia — often called Philly — played a crucial role in American history, and even with limited time, walking through the historic district felt like stepping back in time.
Some of the highlights we explored included iconic landmarks such as the Liberty Bell, Independence Hall, Elfreth’s Alley and the famous Rocky Steps at the Philadelphia Museum of Art.
One of my favorite moments was walking down Benjamin Franklin Parkway toward the museum. Reaching the famous Rocky Steps was a lot of fun, especially because my friends and I took several photos together and enjoyed the panoramic views over the city.

- Longwood Gardens: a beautifully landscaped botanical garden featuring seasonal floral displays, fountains and peaceful walking paths.
- New Hope: a charming riverside town known for its historic streets, boutique shops and scenic views along the Delaware River.
- Valley Forge National Historical Park: a key Revolutionary War site just outside the city.

Day 2️⃣: Six Flags Great Adventure, New Jersey
ℹ️ Six Flags Great Adventure quick facts Distance from Philadelphia: 50 miles / 80 km State: New Jersey Why visit: world-class roller coasters and thrilling rides Seasonal opening: the theme park typically operates from spring through fall, with extended hours during summer and special events such as Halloween-themed celebrations later in the season. Where to eat: casual dining options are available throughout the park
After exploring Philadelphia, we headed to Six Flags Great Adventure, located in New Jersey just over an hour away. This second day of the itinerary brought a completely different rhythm — fast-paced, energetic and filled with adrenaline.
We spent a full Sunday at the park, hopping from ride to ride and making the most of the wide range of attractions available. From towering roller coasters to family-friendly rides and entertainment areas, there was always something happening around us. The lively atmosphere and the constant motion of roller coasters overhead made the entire day feel exciting from start to finish.
Six Flags Great Adventure is more than just an amusement park — it also includes the Hurricane Harbor water park and the Wild Safari drive-through experience, which together make it one of the largest entertainment complexes of its kind on the East Coast. Even though we focused mainly on the main park during our visit, it was impressive to see how much there is to explore across the different sections.
Like most Memorial Day weekend trips, the park was quite busy, but the energy of the crowds only added to the festive start-of-summer feeling. By the time the sun began to set, we were completely exhausted but incredibly happy — exactly how a good day at an amusement park should end.
🧳 Day trips from Six Flags Great Adventure (New Jersey)
If you have extra time in the state of New Jersey, these destinations are excellent additions:
- Atlantic City: famous for its iconic boardwalk, casinos and lively seaside atmosphere.
- Cape May: a picturesque seaside town known for its Victorian architecture, sandy beaches and relaxed coastal atmosphere.
- Princeton: a charming university town known for its historic campus and elegant architecture. We briefly passed through Princeton on our way to Six Flags, and it immediately caught our attention as home to one of the well-known Ivy League universities we had heard so much about.

Day 3️⃣: Rehoboth Beach, Delaware
ℹ️ Rehoboth Beach quick facts Distance from Six Flags Great Adventure: 120 miles / 193 km State: Delaware Why visit: classic East Coast beach atmosphere and lively boardwalk Where to eat: we had lunch at Obie’s By the Sea; browse more options here. Where to stay: find your ideal accommodation in Rehoboth Beach
Memorial Day was beach day for us, and it honestly felt like the perfect way to close out the trip. After the excitement of the theme park, arriving in Rehoboth Beach brought a much calmer pace — sunshine, ocean air and that unmistakable start-of-summer feeling.
Located along the Atlantic Ocean, Rehoboth Beach is known for its sandy shores and lively boardwalk, but what stood out to me most was the natural beauty of the surrounding dune landscape. We stayed next to Rehoboth Beach Dune Nature Park, which made the setting feel especially peaceful compared to the more crowded sections of the beach. We even went for a quick swim in the icy waters — refreshing, even if slightly shocking at first.
Later, we enjoyed a casual meal nearby and walked along the promenade, soaking in the relaxed coastal atmosphere. Delaware is also well known for its tax-free shopping, which makes the area especially appealing for visitors looking to browse local shops or outlets.
By the way, I don’t know about you, but when spending the day by the ocean, I enjoy feeling comfortable. Below are some of the beach essentials that I typically use. Feel free to check out my Decathlon affiliate profile in order to browse additional items.

- Delaware Seashore State Park: a quieter coastal destination known for fishing spots, wide beaches and scenic views along the Atlantic shoreline.
- Lewes: a historic coastal town founded in 1631 as one of the earliest European settlements in Delaware, known for its charming streets and waterfront views.
- New Castle: a beautifully preserved colonial town where cobblestone streets and historic buildings offer a glimpse into Delaware’s early history.

🌉 Crossing the Chesapeake Bay Bridge
As the long weekend came to an end, it was time to begin the journey home to Washington DC. On our way back, we crossed the William Preston Jr. Lane Memorial Bridge, better known as the Chesapeake Bay Bridge, which connects Delaware with Maryland.
Watching the sunset from the car as we crossed the long span of the bridge turned out to be one of the most beautiful moments of the entire trip — a perfect final memory from this Memorial Day weekend road trip.
