Canada

Canada is one of those destinations I’ve been lucky enough to visit a couple of times. While I was living in the USA, Canada was an easy and tempting getaway, so I crossed the border twice — in 2013 and 2016 — and every trip felt different. From vibrant cities to overwhelming nature, Canada always manages to surprise.

It’s a huge country with endless landscapes, friendly people, and a relaxed atmosphere that makes traveling easy and enjoyable. Whether you’re into cities, road trips, or outdoor adventures, Canada has something for you.

With Canada hosting major international events such as the 2026 FIFA World Cup, it’s also a great time to plan a trip around cities like Toronto.

WELCOME TO Canada!

Basic facts

  • Population: 41.6 million (as of 2026)
  • Currency: Canadian dollar (CAD). Check the current exchange rate here.
  • Language: English and French are the official languages in the country although other indigenous languages exist.
  • Territories: the country is composed of five provinces (the Atlantic Provinces, Central Canada, the Northern Territories, the Prairies and the West Coast).
  • Main cities: Ottawa (capital), Toronto, Montreal, Vancouver, Calgary, Edmonton.
  • Fun fact: the country has 20% of the world’s fresh water.

Things to do

Admire Canada’s nature through national parks, lakes, forests, and scenic landscapes.

Explore Toronto and enjoy its skyline views, diverse neighborhoods, and lively urban atmosphere.

See Niagara Falls from the Canadian side and discover the surrounding area.

Visit Montreal to experience its European feel, cultural scene, and historic Old Town.

SOME TIPS

❄️ Best time to visit: summer (June to September) is perfect for sightseeing, national parks, and road trips. Fall is beautiful thanks to the colors, and winter is ideal if you enjoy snow, skiing, or winter cities.

✈️ Getting around: Canada is vast, so flying between cities saves time. Renting a car is a great option if you plan to explore nature or smaller towns.

🎟️ Travel tip: if you’re planning to explore museums, historic sites and national parks across the country, consider the Canada Strong Pass, which offers free or discounted access to participating cultural institutions, heritage sites and natural attractions throughout Canada.

🛂 Visa information: most travelers need either a visa or an Electronic Travel Authorization (eTA) to enter Canada, depending on nationality. Requirements may change, so it’s always best to check the official Canadian government website before planning your trip.

🧳 What to pack: weather can change quickly. Even in summer, it’s a good idea to bring layers.

FOOD IN CANADA

Food is also part of the experience in Canada, and these are some traditional Canadian dishes you shouldn’t miss:

  • 🧈 Butter tarts: one of Canada’s most classic desserts.
  • 🍁 Maple syrup: a national symbol, used in breakfasts, desserts, and even savory dishes.
  • 🍮 Pouding chômeur: a classic Quebec dessert made with cake and hot maple syrup sauce.
  • 🍟 Poutine: fries topped with cheese curds and gravy — simple, filling, and very Canadian.
  • 🐟 Salmon: especially popular on the West Coast, fresh and delicious.
  • 🥧 Tourtière: a traditional French-Canadian meat pie, especially popular in Quebec.
