Everybody has seen New York City in the movies — the iconic skyline, yellow taxis rushing through busy avenues, and lights glowing over Times Square long after midnight. But getting to explore NYC in real life is something entirely different. I still remember my first visit to the city that never sleeps. I spent a weekend there and instantly fell in love with its energy and diversity. There’s a reason why millions of travelers visit the city of New York every year — and why so many of them, like me, keep coming back. In this NYC travel guide, I’ll share the key aspects that make New York City such a captivating place for visitors from around the world.

New York isn’t just a destination; it’s a city that feels alive at every hour of the day.

From iconic landmarks to world-class museums and an incredible food scene, the Big Apple offers something for every kind of traveler. Even after multiple visits, I still find new places to explore, which is one of the many things that keeps the city from ever losing its appeal.

Some of the biggest highlights of visiting New York City include:

  • Iconic landmarks like Central Park or the Statue of Liberty
  • A world-renowned museum scene
  • Diverse neighborhoods
  • Endless food options
  • A vibrant atmosphere day and night

🧭 Understanding NYC

Before planning your trip, it helps to understand how New York City is structured. NYC is enormous, and knowing the basics makes navigating the city much easier — something that this New York travel guide aims to simplify for first-time visitors.

📍 Where is New York City located

New York City is located in the state of New York, on the east coast of the United States. It sits between the Hudson River and the East River, with direct access to the Atlantic Ocean.

Because of its location, NYC has long been an important gateway to the USA. Historically, millions of immigrants arrived here, shaping the multicultural identity that still defines the city today.

Today, the city of New York is one of the most visited destinations in the world and one of the most recognizable urban landscapes anywhere.

👥 New York City population and key facts

New York City is the largest city in the United States, with a population of more than 8 million people.

Some key facts about NYC include:

  • Country: United States of America (USA)
  • State: New York
  • Population: Over 8 million residents
  • Nicknames: NYC, The Big Apple, the city that never sleeps
  • Languages: English (with hundreds of languages spoken citywide)
  • Currency: US Dollar (USD) — when traveling to the United States, paying in local currency can help you avoid unnecessary exchange fees. I personally use my Revolut card when traveling abroad, as it allows me to pay easily in foreign currency and keep track of expenses on the go. I would still recommend carrying a small amount of cash, especially for small shops, markets or food stands that may not accept cards.

One thing that always surprises first-time visitors to New York City is the sheer scale of the city. Across my different trips, I still find new places I hadn’t seen before — which is exactly why NYC keeps pulling travelers back.

🏙️ The 5 boroughs of New York City explained

Understanding the five boroughs is essential when planning your trip, especially when deciding where to stay and what to explore.

The city of New York is made up of five boroughs, each with its own identity, attractions and atmosphere:

  • The Bronx — historic and culturally rich, home to attractions such as Yankee Stadium, the Bronx Zoo and the New York Botanical Garden. It offers a more local and authentic atmosphere compared to Manhattan.
  • Brooklyn — creative and vibrant, known for neighborhoods like Williamsburg and DUMBO, scenic waterfront views and a thriving arts and food scene. Many visitors come here to experience a different perspective of NYC beyond Manhattan.
  • Manhattan — the most iconic borough and where many of the city’s most famous landmarks are located, including Central Park, Times Square and Wall Street. Most first-time visitors to New York City spend the majority of their time here.
  • Queens — culturally diverse and home to major airports, international cuisine and attractions such as Flushing Meadows–Corona Park. It’s known for its multicultural atmosphere and wide variety of food options.
  • Staten Island — quieter and more residential, known for its green spaces and scenic views of the Statue of Liberty from the Staten Island Ferry. It offers a slower pace compared to the rest of the city.
