In this travel guide, I´ll share a few destinations that I visited in the French Alps during my time there, from the charming towns of Annecy or Chamonix, to the elegant Evian or La Clusaz ski resort. The French Alps, Europe’s most majestic mountain range
The French Alps, a breathtaking section of the larger Alps mountain range, offer an unrivaled experience for nature lovers, adventurers, and culture enthusiasts alike. Spanning approximately 1,200 kilometers, the Alps stretch from the Mediterranean all the way to Central Europe, touching Austria, France, Germany, Italy Liechtenstein and Switzerland.
While the broader Alps feature iconic destinations in each of these countries, the French Alps, concentrated in the Auvergne-Rhône-Alpes region, stand out for their dramatic landscapes and alpine culture. Anchored by the regional capital, Lyon, this southeastern corner of France boasts legendary glaciers, serene alpine lakes, and the imposing Mont Blanc, the tallest peak in Western Europe at 4,810 meters.
The area is divided into several départements, with Savoie and Haute-Savoie offering some of the region’s most iconic attractions, including world-class ski resorts like Chamonix, Méribel, or Val d´Isère. Even though this French territory has prospered since alpine holidays and skiing became popular in the 19th century, it remains very conscious of its traditional identity.
When to visit the French Alps
My short answer would be that it really depends on what you´re planning to do. Whether you’re chasing winter sports, embarking on magnificent alpine walks, or immersing yourself in the region’s unique identity, the French Alps promise a spectacular journey any time of the year.
As you can imagine, the temperatures and the weather in the French Alps will vary according to the season. However, it is advisable to always bring plenty of warm clothing regardless of the season because the weather can change suddenly.
- Winter: this is the peak season in the French Alps, transforming the region into a snow-lover’s paradise, perfect for skiing, snowboarding, and cozy evenings in traditional mountain chalets. Throughout this winter wonderland, the ski season typically starts just before Christmas and runs until the end of April. There are virtually endless French alpine resorts to choose from, and many of them are interlinked! I personally went to La Clusaz once and I loved it.
- Spring and summer: during this period, the meadows of the French Alps are full of flowers, including orchids and lilies. The area´s lush green valleys become a paradise for hikers and there are many trails to explore such as GR5 or the Tour du Mont Blanc. Popular lakes like Lake Annecy and Lake Geneva also provide additional opportunities for water sports and relaxation. The summer alpine season usually begins at the end of June and lasts until the beginning of September.
- Fall: the best season to admire the colorful foliage while enjoying the crisp weather!

Chamonix, home to the imposing Mont Blanc

Mont Blanc (literally meaning White Mountain due to its snowy peaks) is the highest summit in the Alps, rising at 4810 meters, and across Europe. If you´re not afraid of heights and fancy panoramic views, take a cable car from Chamonix to Aiguille du Midi at 3842 meters. What to eat in the French Alps
The cuisine of the French Alps is hearty and comforting, reflecting the region’s mountain heritage and chilly climate, especially in the winter. Rich in cheese, potatoes, and cured meats, it’s perfect for refueling after a day on the slopes. If you´re a cheese lover like me, you´ll be in heaven with Alps cheeses ranging from Emmental or Raclette, to Vacherin or Tomme! 🙂
Below you will find a few signature dishes from the French area of Savoy (cuisine savoyarde):
- 🥓 Diots: these local sausages are served with polenta or crozets (small Alpine pasta).
- 🍖 Falette auvergnate: this stuffed veal dish is a specialty of Auvergne and can be served hot with cabbage or cold with salad.
- 🫕Fondue savoyarde: a communal pot of melted cheese with bread for dipping.
- 🐷 Petit salé aux lentilles à l’auvergnate: salted pork with green lentils from Puy.
- 🧀 Raclette: melted cheese served over potatoes and charcuterie.
- 🥔Tartiflette: a baked dish of potatoes, Reblochon cheese, onions, and bacon.
- 🍰 Gâteau de Savoie: for dessert, there´s nothing like this light and airy sponge cake!
To try these delicious specialties throughout the French Alps, you can refer to the section about ´where to eat´ under each destination mentioned above. Bon appétit!

How to get around the French Alps
Getting around the French Alps has its own charm, although it might not be an easy task during the harsh winter months. Browse the various ways of transportation to get around the French Alps below:
- 🚴♂️ By bike: cycling is a popular way to experience the breathtaking scenery of the Alps, especially in warmer months.
- 🚍 By bus: while functional, bus services can be slower and less comfortable compared to other means of transportation. I booked a bus transfer from Geneva to Chamonix with Cham Express shortly after moving to the Swiss city.
- 🚗 By car: once in the French Alps, having a car is ideal for exploring off the beaten path, which is what I did when I went skiing to La Clusaz. Note that winter driving requires extra caution due to snow and ice though. Also, make sure to plan accordingly, as some high-altitude mountain passes may close from November to June due to snow.
- 🥾 By foot: the Alpine breathtaking mountains attract visitors for their magnificent hiking opportunities and all kinds of outdoor activities.
- 🛫 By plane: Geneva and Lyon–Saint Exupéry are the most convenient international airports for accessing the Alps in France.
- 🚊 By train: the region of the French Alps is well-connected to major cities like Paris via the TGV high-speed train to hubs like Lyon or Geneva in Switzerland.
