Best things to do in Les Landes: the perfect blend of coastal villages and countryside charm
Located in southwestern France, in the Nouvelle-Aquitaine region, Les Landes borders the imposing Atlantic Ocean to the west, the department of Pyrénées-Atlantiques to the south (home to places such as Bayonne or Biarritz), Occitanie to the east, and finally Gironde to the north, whose capital is Bordeaux. Drawing from my recent trip to Landes, this travel guide will walk you through the best things to do in Les Landes, including the most picturesque coastal villages and inland destinations, what and where to eat, where to stay and some day trip ideas. At the end of this post, I’ve also included a map so you can easily pinpoint all the locations mentioned here.

Best destinations along the Atlantic Ocean and in the countryside of Les Landes
Nestled in southwestern France, Les Landes is a paradise for nature lovers, surfers, and adventurers alike. Known for its endless pine forests, vast beaches, and incredible surfing spots, the region offers a perfect mix of relaxation and excitement. Although its coastline is especially popular with holidaymakers who flock to its beaches with imposing waves during the summer time, the more tranquil countryside is worth exploring too during any season of the year.
In case you´re debating when is the best time to visit Les Landes, it really depends on what you want to do there! Given the influence of the nearby Atlantic Ocean, the Landes climate is oceanic and mild, being quite rainy and windy in the fall and winter (although we were lucky to enjoy a few glorious, sunny days during our stay in early November), but often hot, humid and stormy in summer.
By far, the most popular season to go on vacation in the Landes is the summer, when visitors enjoy the beaches and the seaside attractions, but alternative periods such as spring are also suitable for beautiful walks in the pine forests. Another great idea is to take advantage of the Landes as winter approaches to enjoy coziness at its best, by enjoying the local gastronomy (did anyone mention foie gras or duck?) or experiencing the distillation of Armagnac!
As for a suggested itinerary throughout Les Landes, I would recommend combining both coastal and inland destinations to grasp the best of what this vast, diverse area of France has to offer. In my opinion, four days would suffice, but devoting a whole week to explore the region would be ideal if you have enough time.

Coastal villages along Les Landes
Apart from its miles and miles of beaches, perfect for surfing, the Landes is also known for its coastal towns, ideal for spending a few days on holiday.
The long stretch of coastline between La Pointe de Grave in the Gironde estuary and Bayonne is called Côte d’Argent (literally meaning Silver Coast). It is practically a single beach of dunes with, apparently, no end in sight!
Please note that most destinations near the Atlantic coastline are divided in two distinct parts: the village itself – often referred to as ´bourg´ (say Labenne or Mimizan) – and its counterpart by the seaside (take Labenne-Océan or Mimizan Plage for example). For ease of reference, I´ve included these locations under the section on coastal villages given their short distance to the beach.
Starting north from Bordeaux and heading south towards the border dividing France and Spain, you will find below my pick of coastal villages in Les Landes sorted in that order. There are of course plenty of them worth mentioning, but in this post I will just focus on a few.

Biscarrosse and Biscarrosse Plage
First on our list of coastal villages in Landes, Biscarrosse is a must-visit. Located just 45 minutes from Arcachon and the highest dune in Europe (Dune du Pilat), this gem offers a mix of stunning natural landscapes and vibrant activities.
Biscarrosse Plage boasts expansive golden beaches, making it a haven for surfers and water sports enthusiasts.
Beyond the coastline, the area is surrounded by lush pine forests and the serene Lac de Biscarrosse, perfect for cycling, hiking, or enjoying a peaceful day by the water. Families will love the nearby aquapark by the lake, while adults can unwind at the Casino de Biscarrosse for a lively evening. Whether you’re seeking adventure or tranquility, Biscarrosse has something for everyone!
Mimizan and Mimizan Plage
Located just 40 minutes from Biscarrosse, Mimizan is a delightful coastal destination divided into two distinct areas: the village of Mimizan and Mimizan Plage. During our trip, we had dinner at A Noste, we spent a night at Les jardins de Mimizan (see ´where to stay in Les Landes´ for more info) and we walked by the beach in Plage des Ailes on the next day. We loved Mimizan!
Why? Because the village exudes charm with its small shops, aromatic gardens, and a lively market near the church of Notre Dame des Dunes. In contrast, Mimizan Plage offers a vibrant beach town vibe, especially during summer, with bustling cafes, bars, restaurants, and shops. The expansive Plage des Ailes stretches for kilometers with golden sand as far as the eye can see, making it perfect for sunbathing, surfing, or leisurely strolls by the waves. Other beaches in Mimizan, to name just a few, include Plage du Camping, Plage Remember or Plage Sud.
Nature lovers will adore La Promenade Fleurie, a picturesque garden filled with blooming flowers and lush greenery (free entrance). Nestled alongside the serene Étang d’Aureilhan, this setting is ideal for peaceful walks, picknicking or connecting with nature. The Courant de Mimizan, a typical Landes river linking the lake to the ocean, is another highlight for water activities or tranquil moments by the shore.
Further south lies another lake (étang de la Malloueyre) and a biological reserve.
Contis-les-Bains and Contis Plage
This charming coastal village in Les Landes is a hidden gem that combines history, nature, and a relaxed seaside atmosphere. You will find that Contis-les-Bains is a haven for outdoor enthusiasts. Canoeing on the Courant de Contis, bordered by mangroves and oak trees, is a unique way to experience the region’s wild beauty. The area also offers windsurfing, sailing, fishing, and even electric boat rides, ensuring there’s no shortage of adventure or relaxation options.
A must-see is the Contis Lighthouse (phare de Contis), a 19th-century landmark built under Napoleon III. Painted in its iconic spiral design by local artist Bellocq in 1937, the lighthouse stands 55 meters above sea level and offers stunning panoramic views of the coastline.
In addition to the lighthouse, take a leisurely stroll along Avenue de l’Océan, where you’ll find a selection of shops, bars, and restaurants. For beach lovers, the local beach and its scenic viewpoint are perfect for relaxing or enjoying the sea breeze.
Vieux-Boucau-les-Bains
Also known simply as Vieux-Boucau, this charming coastal town in Les Landes is a perfect blend of relaxation, outdoor adventures, and picturesque scenery.
Its highlight is the vast Plage des Sablères, an immense beach ideal for sunbathing, swimming, or simply enjoying the Atlantic views.
For a different kind of water experience, head to the Lac Marin de Port d’Albret, a saltwater lagoon where visitors can enjoy activities like paddleboarding, kayaking, or walking along its scenic trails. You will even find a few beaches along the lake.
If you follow the Courant de Soustons inland, you will reach the Ponton d’Azur at Lac de Soustons, a stunning dock offering beautiful views of the serene lake and its surroundings. Hikers and bikers can also explore various scenic trails in the area.
Seignosse and Le Penon
Seignosse is an essential stop on any trip through Les Landes, offering a diverse range of activities for all tastes. If you’re a surfing enthusiast, you’ll be thrilled to know that Seignosse is one of France’s surfing hotspots, with numerous surf schools dotting the area. At Plage du Penon, a wooden boardwalk stretches over the dunes, offering stunning sea views. Other beaches in Seignosse include Plage des Casernes, Plage des Bourdaines or Plage des Estagnots.
For those who prefer exploring on foot or by bike, the Seignosse Forest (Forêt Communale de Seignosse) boasts a variety of scenic trails. A must-visit is the Réserve Naturelle de l’Étang Noir, where a wooden boardwalk takes you through wetlands teeming with wildlife before arriving at a serene lake. The bigger Étang Blanc lying nearby is worth a stop too.
Golf lovers will be happy to learn that they can have fun at the Golf de Seignosse.
For a more laid-back experience, head to Le Penon, Seignosse’s coastal neighborhood. This area features a lively mix of shops, bars, and restaurants, perfect for unwinding after a day of adventure.
Soorts-Hossegor
Known simply as Hossegor, this vibrant coastal town lies between Capbreton and Seignosse, offering a mix of adrenaline-filled activities, shopping opportunities, and relaxation.
Renowned as a surfing mecca, Hossegor attracts wave riders from all over the globe to its ocean beaches, which are perfect for both beginners and pros. For those looking to unwind, the extensive beaches are also ideal for sunbathing, swimming, or taking leisurely strolls along the shore. Plage de La Gravière, Plage Centrale or Plage Sud are some of the Hossegor beaches worth mentioning.
This coastal destination is a shopping paradise, particularly in its outlet district in Soorts-Hossegor. Here, you’ll find major brands like Billabong, Carhartt or Rip Curl, often with great deals—and yes, many are open on Sundays!
Hossegor also has a cultural side. A visit to the “Mur Vague” mural is a must for art lovers. The town’s promenade, perfect for a walk, connects various highlights, blending natural beauty with urban charm.
For something different, head to the lake area (Lac d´Hossegor), a hub of activity where you can paddleboard, fish or swim. The tranquil setting contrasts beautifully with the vibrant beach life, offering a more relaxed pace.
Last but not least, nature enthusiasts will also enjoy the scenic hiking and biking trails around Hossegor.
Capbreton
Capbreton is one of the most popular destinations in Les Landes and a coastal gem in Les Landes, and it’s easy to see why!
One of the highlights is the iconic Estacade de Capbreton, a 189-meter-long pier constructed under Napoleon III in 1858. At its very end, you’ll find a picturesque lighthouse added in 1948, making it a perfect spot for photos and sea views.
As you can imagine being in a coastal village, there are plenty of beaches to choose from in Capbreton such as Plage de l’Estacade, Plage Centrale de Capbreton, Plage du Prévent, Plage de la Savane (Santocha), Plage de la Piste or Plage des Océanides.
Other spots worth visiting in Capbreton include the lively market (Marché de Capbreton), the town center with its quaint streets and the historic church of Saint Nicholas, or the bustling fish market (marché aux poissons) next to the fishing port.
Capbreton is also a haven for outdoor enthusiasts, with various scenic trails to explore the area’s natural beauty.
Bonus: Labenne, Ondres and Soustons
The three following destinations wrap my list of coastal villages worth discovering in Les Landes.
- Labenne and Labenne-Océan: Labenne is a picturesque town in Les Landes that offers a blend of coastal beauty and unique landmarks. One of its most remarkable sights is the Chapelle Sainte-Thérèse, built in 1932 atop sand dunes just steps from the central beach. Nature lovers may want to stop by the natural reserve (Réserve Naturelle Nationale du Marais d’Orx) near the village of Labenne.
- Ondres: this peaceful town charms visitors with its natural beauty and laid-back vibe. Known for its expansive beaches bordered by rolling dunes and lush pine forests, Ondres is an ideal destination for those seeking relaxation or outdoor adventures. The beach is perfect for sunbathing, beachcombing, or catching the Atlantic waves. During our visit, we enjoyed a delicious picnic at Plage d’Ondres-Océan. It was a perfect way to soak up the peaceful beach atmosphere and finish our Landes trip on a high note!
- Soustons: just 15 minutes from Vieux-Boucau, this destination offers a tranquil escape with its picturesque Étang de Soustons, a serene lake surrounded by lush greenery. Perfect for a relaxing day in nature, the lake is ideal for paddleboarding, kayaking, or simply enjoying a leisurely walk along its peaceful shores. The area is also a haven for picnics, offering scenic spots to unwind and savor the beauty of Les Landes. Alternatively, you can have fun at Golf de Pinsolle.
Countryside destinations in Landes
As opposed to the popular coastal villages along the Atlantic Ocean that draw most visitors, Les Landes holds a second treasure: its tranquil countryside featuring the largest pine forest in Europe.
The extensive forest of the Landes dates back to the 19th century. Although it is entirely artificial, it is now a signature of the region and drives its forestry economy. This is the result of an ambitious project initiated in 1855 to drain the surface in order to convert the existing dunes and marshes into a green area. Everywhere you drive in Les Landes, chances are you´ll be completely surrounded by towering pine trees as far as the eye can see!
The interior of the Landes is still sparsely inhabited today. Inland, you will find a series of lakes that are ideal for fishing and rowing. They are connected to each other and to the ocean by fast water currents known as courants in French. If you like hiking, water sports or cycling, the Landes will be a paradise for you!
In this section, I will cover the most relevant destinations located in the Landes countryside, sorted in alphabetical order. These are the two main cities in the region, as well as some natural spaces worth discovering.
Dax
The city of Dax is well known in France for housing a thermal spa, which is only second in importance to Aix-les-Bains (located in Auvergne-Rhône-Alpes). Its thermal springs with a constant temperature of 64 degrees and its tonic muds from the Adour river have been proverbial since Roman times. Some places worth mentioning in Dax to enjoy these thermal benefits include the following: Thermes Adour, Thermes Bérot, Thermes Borda, Thermes des Arènes, Thermes Les Écureuils.
Should you decide to visit Dax, these are the places I recommend you include as part of your itinerary: Fontaine Chaude, the Notre Dame Cathedral (pay particular attention to the 13th century door), the Gallo-Roman walls and the Atrium concert hall. A walk along the Adour river is also charming and its bullring is internationally famous.
Mont-de-Marsan
Welcome to the administrative capital of the Landes and its most populated city!
The city of Mont-de-Marsan is well known for its poultry farming and the preparation of foie-gras.
It is also considered the mecca of bullfighting as it attracts great bullfighters from both France and Spain during the summer season. The statue of La Force from 1937 by Raoul Lamourdieu depicting a man holding a bull´s horns is the perfect illustration of this local passion. Another popular variant in the area is the course landaise, consisting in jumping over the horns of a cow.
Other highlights worth mentioning in Mont-de-Marsan include its city center (wander around Place du Général Leclerc, église de la Madeleine or Parc Jean Rameau), the racecourse, and the Musée Despiau-Wlérick. You can also admire the Midouze river from the Gisèle Halimi bridge while having a look at a sculpture called ´the diver´.
Parc naturel régional des Landes de Gascogne
This vast natural park (Parc naturel régional des Landes de Gascogne) encompassing over 336 000 hectares straddles the departments of Landes and Gironde.
This territory covers a large part of the pine forest in the region and is perfect for hiking, canoeing, or just relaxing by the lakes and rivers.
Here is a selection of the best things to visit in the Landes de Gascogne Regional Natural Park:
- Domaine d’Hostens and Lagunes du Gat Mort: this natural area extends over 730 hectares, occupying five large lakes, numerous wetlands and a marsh dotted with lagoons and wet moors.
- The Arcachon Basin Nature House: Located on the edge of the Teich Ornithological Reserve, between the delta of a wild river and the salt waters of the Arcachon Basin, this nature house remains an exceptional place to observe birds and appreciate the landscapes.
- The Leyre Delta and the Teich Ornithological Reserve: this delta is where the fresh waters of the river and the salt waters of the ocean meet, resulting in a wide variety of species. Located on one of the most important migration routes in Europe, this is truly the birds´ paradise.
- The Marquèze Ecomuseum: created in 1969, this ecomuseum (Écomusee de Marquèze) was one of the very first ecomuseums in France. Its mission is to preserve, study and transmit the heritage of the Grande Lande by reconstructing the living environment of its inhabitants in the 19th century, when shepherds used stilts to get around and before the marshes were drained. Visitors can take a small steam train through a traditional airial – a plot of land covered with lawn and planted with a few oaks or umbrella pines, on which there is one or more dwellings typical of the Landes – while admiring traditional wooden houses with steeply pitched roofs (auberges landaises).
- The valleys of Leyre: this calm and wild river stretches for nearly 100 km, from the south of the Natural Park to the Arcachon basin where it flourishes in a delta. A few paths run along it but the most exciting activity is canoeing or kayaking, a truly magical experience!
Réserve Naturelle du Courant d’Huchet
As mentioned earlier, when exploring Les Landes, you will find a series of fast water currents known as courants in French connecting the lakes to the Atlantic Ocean. The most famous of these is Réserve Naturelle du Courant d’Huchet, a natural reserve originating from the nearby Étang de Léon.
This protected space is considered the ´Amazon of les Landes´ and features various trails to explore its rich and exotic flora. That being said, the most popular attraction in Courant d´Huchet is discovering the area on a traditional boat called ´galupe´.
Bonus: charming countryside locations in Landes
In case you would like to keep traveling throughout the Landes countryside further, these are a few ideas worth visiting inland.
- Labastide-d’Armagnac: this is probably the most charming village of the list. Start your visit at the elegant Place Royale with its distinctive arcades, where the Église Notre-Dame de Labastide-d’Armagnac is located. After that, wander around the quaint little streets. Near Labastide you will find two more unique spots: Écomusée de l’Armagnac to learn more about this local drink and a curious chapel dedicated to cyclists (Chapelle Notre-Dame des Cyclistes).
- Lévignacq: this tiny village is one of the prettiest in Les Landes thanks to its beautiful half-timbered houses and its remarkable 14th-century fortified church (église Saint-Martin).
- Luxey: a local museum (Musée de l’estupe Huc) recalls old resin-collecting and distilling techniques.
- Saint-Justin: a few spots worth a detour in this charming village near Labastide include Place des Tilleuls and Église Saint-André.

Below you will find a list detailing the various ways to get around les Landes.
- 🚲 By bike: Les Landes is ideal for cycling thanks to its flat terrain and extensive bike trails. One of my future plans is to bring my own bike on the TER train in order to explore at my own pace.
