The Bonaventure Cemetery in Savannah is full of Spanish moss and lush vegetation

After visiting Charleston as the first stop of our road trip, we arrived to Georgia. We spent a day in the charming city of Savannah. Let me tell you all there is to see and do!

What to know about Savannah

Located in the state of Georgia and established in 1733, Savannah has earned its reputation for beauty and sophistication thanks to its lush parks and elegant residences. The city is covered with Spanish moss and was designed on a grid with small squares to deter invaders. Today these squares are filled with statues and fountains, frequented by visitors riding on horse-drawn carriages.

What to do in Savannah in a day

Although one day might seem short to visit Savannah (and I certainly wished to stay longer), it is enough to get a feel on what this enchanting city has to offer.

Here are my recommended activities to do while you’re in Savannah:

  • Admire the antebellum mansions throughout the downtown districts
  • Walk along River Street
  • Chill at Forsyth Park
  • Visit the Bonaventure Cemetery
  • Indulge yourself with the local goodies

Each year Savannah attracts millions of visitors to its cobblestone streets, parks, and notable historic buildings. Downtown Savannah largely retains the original town plan prescribed by founder James Oglethorpe.

What I liked the most during our visit to the city was observing the beautiful architecture of mansions under the characteristic Spanish moss. An example of this was the Owens -Thomas House & Slave Quarters. Built in the Regency style in 1819, this historic home is now operated as a museum.

Walk along River Street

Steps from the water and housed in one-time cotton warehouses, there are more than 75 boutiques, galleries, artists’ studios, restaurants and pubs located on Savannah’s River Street. You may also see passengers boarding on steamboats on the Savannah River.

Chill at Forsyth Park

This huge park in the historic district of Savannah is perfect for spending a peaceful afternoon. It features a historical fountain and a Confederate memorial.

Visit the Bonaventure Cemetery

Bonaventure Cemetery is a rural cemetery located on a scenic bluff of the Wilmington River, a short drive east of the city. It became famous when it was featured in the 1994 novel Midnight in the Garden of Good and Evil by John Berendt, and in the subsequent movie, directed by Clint Eastwood, based on the book.

While we were there, we visited the tombs of world-renowned lyricist John Mercer and writer Conrad Aitken.

This peaceful cemetery, filled with Spanish moss and lush vegetation, was probably the most beautiful one I’ve ever seen.

Indulge yourself with the local goodies

There’s nothing like tasting local food to savor a new destination, don’t you think?

Well, I do. And to start with, we headed to the Byrd’s cookies store in the City Market. This company founded in Savannah in 1924 is now one of the largest and fastest-growing independent cookie, snack and gift companies in the United States. We also stopped for our Sunday brunch at J. Christopher’s.

After our day-visit to Savannah, we drove towards northern Florida.
