Last Friday afternoon we took the train from Geneva to Zurich. It took us almost 3 hours to get there but the ride, which went by the lake for a while, was very pleasant. The arrival to Zurich’s Hauptbahnhof and the sight of the Landesmuseum (the Swiss National Museum) next to it were impressive too.

What to see in Zurich

The city of Zurich, a global center for banking and finance, lies at the north end of Lake Zurich in northern Switzerland. The picturesque lanes of the central Altstadt (Old Town), on either side of the Limmat River, reflect its pre-medieval history. Waterfront promenades like the Limmatquai follow the river toward the 17th-century Rathaus (town hall).

These were our favorite spots in Zurich:

  • Lindenhof – this is the Roman and medieval are of the city. Check out Peterskirche and explore the narrow streets by going up and down the hill. Enjoy the view of the Limmat river from the top of Lindenhof.
  • Bahnhofstrasse – stroll this expensive and luxurious street and stop half way in Paradeplatz to explore the delicious chocolate at Sprüngli;
  • Fraumünster ( built on the remains of a former abbey) at the spacious Münsterhof square. Zurich still hosts many guild houses, two of the most famous – Zunfthaus zur Waag and Zunfthaus zur Meisen – being located at Münsterhof;
  • Grossmünster –  a Romanesque-style Protestant church and one of the four major churches in the city with its two charasteristic twin towers.
  • Lake Zurich – enjoy the view of the busy boats!

OUR MUSIC SELECTION FOR THE TRIP

Trip details

Hostel: Linda’s Beauty (terrible place, don’t get a room there!)

Where to eat and drink:

  • Kindli – you should not miss this place! We had a lovely dinner here. We got a small table outside (perfect spot for people watching locals), the waiter was perfect and the dinner was delicious. Try their geschnetzeltes Kalbfleisch (veal in white wine and cream sauce with morels) and their tarte tatin.
  • Kon-Tiki bar – OK for a beer at Zurich’s famous party street, Niederdorfstrasse.
  • Café Mohrenkopf – we had a good brunch here (Frühstück Spezial)
  • Confiserie Sprüngli – look for some typically Swiss chocolate (we tried their champagne truffles and some other sweet stuff).
