✨ Why every Harry Potter fan should visit the studio tour

I’ve been a huge Harry Potter fan since I was a teenager. That’s exactly why visiting the Warner Bros Studio Tour London had been on my bucket list for years.

My journey into the wizarding world actually started by accident. My brother had received the first Harry Potter book as a gift, but he wasn’t much of a reader — I was the complete opposite. As soon as I read the back cover, I was intrigued. I devoured the first book… then the second… and eventually the entire series. The Harry Potter books and later the Harry Potter movies became a huge part of my teenage years, which made visiting the studios even more special.

Before visiting the Harry Potter Studio Tour London, I reread the entire seven-book series once again — this time in English — and rewatched all the movies so everything would be fresh in my mind. If you’re planning your visit, I highly recommend watching the Harry Potter movies once more beforehand. Recognizing the sets, props and costumes as you walk through the studios makes the entire experience feel even more magical.

Unlike theme parks inspired by the wizarding world (such as the Universal Studios that I visited years ago in Orlando), the London studios are the actual filming location where large parts of the movies were produced. This means you’re not just seeing replicas — you’re walking through the real sets used in the films.

Throughout the Harry Potter studio tour you’ll discover:

  • Filmmaking secrets from the production team
  • Miniature models created for visual effects
  • Original costumes worn by the actors
  • Props used during filming

🎬 What to see at the Harry Potter Studios

The Harry Potter Studio Tour is essentially a self-guided walkthrough of the sets, props and filmmaking secrets behind the movies. The displays are primarily in English, but visitors can rent digital guides that provide additional explanations in several languages if needed.

Although the official recommended visit time is around three hours, we ended up spending five and a half hours exploring the studios because there was simply so much to see. The Harry Potter Studios are much larger than they first appear, and the exhibition easily fills half a day.

Some of the highlights of the Harry Potter Studio Tour London include iconic locations such as the Great Hall of Hogwarts, Diagon Alley, Platform 9¾ and the Hogwarts Express, along with many original props and costumes used throughout the films.

Before entering the exhibition itself, visitors watch a short introductory film that retraces the story of the Harry Potter books and movies and the making of the saga. The experience ends with the doors of the Great Hall opening in front of you — a moment that feels surprisingly magical.

Let’s now take a closer look at some of my own highlights at the Harry Potter Studios in London.

🍽️ The Great Hall

One of the most iconic sets in the entire Harry Potter series is the Great Hall of Hogwarts, where students gather for meals, celebrations and important announcements.

The studio tour actually begins here, and walking through the massive doors into the hall felt like stepping straight into the films. It was truly exciting!

Interestingly, the design of the Great Hall was inspired by the dining hall at Christ Church College in Oxford, one of the historic university buildings used as filming locations for Hogwarts scenes that I was fortunate to visit some years ago.

🚂 Hogwarts Express and Platform 9¾

Another unforgettable section of the Harry Potter Studio Tour London is Platform 9¾, where the famous Hogwarts Express awaits.

Visitors can walk alongside the train and explore some of the compartments used during filming.

🏦 Diagon Alley and Gringotts

Few places capture the magic of the wizarding world better than Diagon Alley, the crooked street filled with magical shops. The studio version recreates the buildings and storefronts exactly as they appear in the films. I loved every single detail!

Later in the tour you’ll also see the impressive Gringotts Wizarding Bank set, with its huge marble columns, goblin desks and the imposing Ukrainian Ironbelly dragon perched on the roof, which breathes fire every 15 minutes or so.

🏰 Hogwarts Castle model

One of the most impressive parts of the exhibition is the large-scale model of Hogwarts Castle, which was used for many exterior shots in the Harry Potter movies. The incredibly detailed miniature was filmed repeatedly throughout the series to create sweeping aerial views of the school and its surroundings.

Seeing it up close was honestly one of my favorite moments of the entire visit. I was amazed by the level of detail that went into the model — it really makes you appreciate the craftsmanship behind the films.

🪄 Iconic sets and props

Throughout the Warner Bros Studio Tour London, visitors can explore many of the iconic sets that appeared in the films, offering a rare opportunity to step directly into the wizarding world created by J.K. Rowling.

Among the highlights are locations such as Dumbledore’s Office, the Gryffindor Common Room, Hagrid’s Hut, the Forbidden Forest, and the Ministry of Magic, all recreated with remarkable attention to detail.

Beyond the sets themselves, one of the most fascinating aspects of the Harry Potter Studio Tour is discovering how much craftsmanship went into the props and costumes used during filming — even objects that only appear for a few seconds in the Harry Potter movies were carefully designed and crafted.

The exhibition showcases hundreds of original items created for the movies, including:

  • Hogwarts uniforms worn by the actors throughout the series
  • Magical creature models used during production
  • Potion ingredients prepared for Hogwarts classroom scenes
  • Wands used by the actors during filming

Throughout the exhibition, videos and display panels also explain how many of the special effects were designed and produced, revealing the techniques used to combine practical effects with digital magic.

For fans of the films, this section offers a fascinating glimpse into the incredible level of detail that helped bring the wizarding world to life.

☕ The outdoor backlot

While most of the Harry Potter Studios are indoors, one section of the tour takes visitors outside.

This outdoor backlot includes:

  • Privet Drive
  • The Burrow exterior
  • The Herbology greenhouse
  • The Hogwarts Bridge
  • The Knight Bus

I particularly loved discovering these sets in real life after seeing them so many times on screen.

This area is also where visitors can usually try Butterbeer, the famous drink from the Harry Potter movies. I had already tried it years ago at Universal Studios in Orlando and personally found it far too sweet — but many fans still consider it a must-try during the visit.

🎬 Interactive experiences

Beyond the impressive sets and props, the Harry Potter Studio Tour London also includes several interactive experiences that allow visitors to better understand how the films were made.

These activities recreate some of the movie-making techniques used during production and make the tour especially engaging for visitors of all ages.

During the visit you can try experiences such as:

  • Experimenting with visual effects used in the movies
  • Learning about camera perspective tricks used during filming
  • Riding a broomstick using green-screen technology

These interactive elements add another dimension to the Harry Potter Studio Tour, transforming the visit from a simple exhibition into a truly immersive behind-the-scenes experience.
