United Kingdom

The United Kingdom, also known as the UK, lies in northwestern Europe. It is made up of England, Scotland, Wales and Northern Ireland.

From the bustling city of London to the lovely cottages spread around the UK countryside, this destination has a lot to offer and I´ve been lucky to visit various times over the years.

BRITISH FOOD

British cuisine is a mix of comfort food, rich traditions, and hearty flavors. From cozy pub classics to elegant tea rooms, the UK’s food scene is packed with flavors that reflect its history and culinary heritage.

When visiting the United Kingdom, make sure to try these quintessential British experiences.

For a casual but classic morning meal, don’t miss the Full English Breakfast, which typically includes eggs, bacon, sausages, baked beans, grilled tomatoes and mushrooms, as well as toast.

The Afternoon Tea is another must-try. Typically served around 4pm, expect a selection of finger sandwiches, scones with clotted cream and jam, and delicate pastries, accompanying a pot of comforting English tea.

To finish your day on a high note, head to the Pubs or “public houses”. These are a cornerstone of British culture where locals gather for drinks, food, and socializing. Today, they remain a beloved tradition, offering everything from classic ales and hearty meals to a warm, communal atmosphere.

Traditional British food

Fish & Chips: crispy battered fish with thick-cut fries, best enjoyed with salt, vinegar, and mushy peas.

Roast Beef & Yorkshire Pudding: a Sunday classic served with roasted potatoes, vegetables, and gravy.

Shepherd’s pie: a comforting dish made with minced lamb and topped with creamy mashed potatoes.

Steak and kidney pie: a rich and hearty meat pie filled with beef, kidney, and a thick, savory gravy.

Cheeses: you have an endless variety to choose from, including Cheddar, Red Leicester or Stilton.

Desserts: you´re in for a treat with Sticky Toffee Pudding, Treacle Tart or Victoria Sponge.

Good to know when travelling to the UK

  • Brits drive on the left hand side of the road, so be careful if you’re used to doing it the other way around, especially when crossing the street!
  • It rains quite a lot in the UK, so always remember to take your umbrella with you. A warm cup of tea will be your best friend too.
